Rapid Growth, Lasting Impact

How Cottonwoods Accelerate Forest Development and Carbon Accumulation

At the heart of our operations is Big River Nursery, founded in 2004 and located in Winnsboro, LA. This nursery is responsible for the growth, cutting, transport, and planting of over 10 million cottonwood cuttings annually, holding over 90% of the U.S. market. Cottonwoods are chosen for their rapid growth—reaching 6-8 feet per year—which helps accelerate the establishment of new forests.

Early Shade

Cottonwoods provide essential early shade for smaller hardwoods, transforming marginal soil into fertile ground.

Ecosystem Restoration

They attract insects and birds, helping create a fully functioning forest by year four.

Mature Forest Canopy

Selective harvesting at years 10, 17, and 25 promotes hardwood growth, forming a complete forest canopy by year 26.

A Powerful Ally in Reforestation

Fast-Growing and Resilient, Cottonwoods
Enhance Ecosystem Recovery and
Carbon Sequestration

Cottonwood trees are an excellent choice for reforestation efforts due to their rapid growth and resilience in various soil conditions. Their ability to quickly establish root systems helps stabilize the soil, preventing erosion and supporting the recovery of ecosystems. Additionally, cottonwoods are highly effective at sequestering carbon, making them a valuable asset in combating climate change and restoring deforested areas.
